The Things We Take for Granted
Like many others, we found ourselves without electricity for large chunks of time this weekend. These power outages were caused by the storms that hit our area, and hydro crews have been working tirelessly to restore service.
It made me realize just how fortunate we are to know that, sooner or later, the power will come back on and life will return to normal. Electricity is one of those things I take for granted. I expect it to be there whenever I need it, and when it isnβt, itβs usually just an inconvenience for a few hours.
But there are many people in Canada and around the world for whom reliable electricity is not a given. Whether due to geography, infrastructure, poverty, conflict, or natural disasters, access to power remains uncertain for millions.
It makes me wonder: what other resources, services, or everyday comforts do we simply assume will be there when we need them? Clean water, internet access, transportation, healthcare, grocery stores, our church communities, and even the ability to communicate with loved ones are things many of us rarely think twice about.
Sometimes it takes a temporary disruption to remind us just how much we rely on the things we often take for granted.
